It Came From the Megatouch: Night of Family Fun (no family required)

UPDATE: Now with pictures!

Halloween makes me wish I was a kid. The costumes, the anticipation… the CANDY!!!

I had a very nice trip down memory lane choosing the DVDs for the It Came From the Megatouch Monster Madness HD: Night of Family Fun contest.

Let me start by saying that no- not everyone gets to be a kid at Halloween. I miss the days of spending HOURS trying to come up with the perfect Halloween costume, checking the Oct. 31st weather forecast 4 times a day, and the long hours of trick-or-treating.

As a kid, scouring the same streets year after year, I learned which houses gave the full-sized candy bars (score!), which houses gave the non-candy treats (worth checking out since it might mean a handful of MONEY… even if it is mostly pennies), which houses had the weird candy (sesame candy? starlight mints? no thank you), and which houses liked to invite you in before forking over the goods (to be avoided at all costs).

Candy just tastes better when you know you’ve earned it. As an adult, we don’t get to do this. We just go to the store, buy the candy, and eat it. Boring.

So how do you uphold the spirit of the season? With Halloween movies of course! I watched these movies as a kid, and now I re-watch them annually to help get me in the spirit. They’re the one thing that I can still experience with the same joy and anticipation that I had as a kid, except now I own them on DVD and can watch them whenever is convenient, so you’ll never again hear me cry “Oh why did you MAKE me take a bath if you KNEW Great Pumpkin was on??? I hate you! Now I have to wait until next year to watch it”. Oh, sorry— we’re getting off track here. Allow me to present the movies, and a seasonally appropriate quote from each.

  • It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown: “Each year, the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch that he thinks is the most sincere. He’s gotta pick this one. He’s got to. I don’t see how a pumpkin patch can be more sincere than this one. You can look around and there’s not a sign of hypocrisy. Nothing but sincerity as far as the eye can see.”

  • The Witches: “One dose, and the time works to the second. But more than five doses breaks the delay barrier, and the formula works instantly. Child… starts to shrink. The child… starts to… grow fur. Starts… growing a tail! All this happens in precisely twenty-five seconds! Shrinking more… child is no longer a child. Child… is a MOUSE!”

  • Casper: “It’s my party and I’ll die if I want do, die if I want to. You will die too, when it happens to you.”

  • The Haunted Mansion: “Wait a minute. You’re telling me this guy is dead, and the only reason we were brought here is he wants to get jiggy with my wife?”

  • Beetlejuice: “So you were miserable in New York City, and now you’re going to be miserable out here in the sticks. At least someone’s life hasn’t been upheaved.”

Agree\Disagree? What movies did you like as a kid?
