For Those About to Rock Mahjong, We Salute You (with this playlist)

The songs you NEED to listen to while playing Rock Mahjong HD.

We are pretty excited about the release of our newest game for iPad – Rock Mahjong HD. Oh, what? Hadn’t heard? Well it’s available NOW in the app store. We recommend you get it for many reasons, one of them being that you can add your own playlist!
Certainly, you can add whatever you want, but our team of writers has banged their heads together and come up with what we think is the perfect playlist. Not for the faint of heart, but, then again, neither are we. Of course, if you have any other suggestions, let us know in the comments!

Want these songs but spent all your money buying Grandma’s Christmas present (or let’s be honest… Skyrim)? You’re in luck! Check back on November 28th, because we’re giving away a $25 iTunes gift card.

JIM’S PICKS:

“Welcome to the Jungle”, Guns N’ Roses
It’s right there in the first line of the song for cryin’ out loud – “Welcome to the jungle, we’ve got fun and games.” It’s like Axl, Slash, and the boys had Rock Mahjong in mind when they wrote this tune back in the day. Honestly, there is no better mahjong trash talk than “You know where you are? You’re in the jungle, baby. You’re gonna diiiiiiiieeeeeeee!”

“Bang Your Head (Metal Health)”, Quiet Riot
Healthcare is a hot topic these days and what better way to keep your metal health in tip-top shape than a rousing bout of doctor recommended head banging? What was true in the 80s is true today: “I want it louder, more power, I’m gonna rock ya till it strikes the hour” – but guess what? They never say what that hour is, so keep playing until you bang your head right off your shoulders! It’s as though Quiet Riot saw the future and that future was Megatouch: “Metal Health’ll cure your crazy, Metal Health’ll cure your mad. Rock Mahjong is what we all need. It’s what you have to have!”

LACEY’S PICKS:

“You Give Love a Bad Name”, Bon Jovi
At this point, Bon Jovi is an American institution, and how could they not be?  And this particular video is so 80s, I bet your hair got a little bit bigger just watching it – a live performance dream.  Look closely at that video, it’s almost like we based Rock Mahjong on it, right down to the crowd noise. The song is all rise, and, as Barney Stinson might say, it’s filled with psychitude. If it doesn’t psych you up to make some serious matches, I don’t know what will.

 ”Paper in Fire”, John Mellencamp
I feel a kinship with old John, and not just because I go around calling myself Lacey Cougar. I too was born in a small town, and my parents live in that same small town. I’m also a little angry about the demise of the American small farm. But mostly I picked this song, because if I’m being honest, we’re just not going to find much metal on my iPod. But you are going to find every John “Cougar” Mellencamp song released in the 80s. In “Paper In Fire,” his anger is tempered with a groove that I personally can’t deny. It makes me wanna rock more than Quiet Riot, with all due respect(Editor’s Note – How dare you??). That’s why it earns a spot on my Rock Mahjong playlist.

ELISSA’S PICKS:

“Skate or Die”, Teenage Bottlerocket
Fun, fast, and rebellious, just like good skate rock is supposed to be. It’ll take you back to high school summers.

“Wanderlust King”, Gogol Bordello
This so-strange-it-works moment one comes courtesy of Gypsy punks Gogol Bordello.  On stage or off, they’re a nonstop party.

KURT’S PICKS:

“Operation Ground and Pound”, Dragon Force
Dragon Force is what you get if you take power metal and strip out everything but the guitar solos, then to string them together you add some more guitar solos and some absurd lyrics about swords, fire, and also more swords. The video for Operation Ground and Pound (sample lyrics: “Crashing steel and raging fury / smash the quest, destroy their army / Crush the legions of the twilight, templars of steel will burn”) features the band defeating planet-destroying spaceships with the power of metal and a Dance Dance Revolution-style guitar duel, and that’s really all you need to know.
Apparently their vocalist recently quit the band, but it’s more likely that he just sang so hard his head blew up, leaving nothing but a fine red mist and several feet of glorious blond hair.

“Princes of the Universe”, Queen
In the 80s, Queen would apparently record original songs for literally any movie that came along. How else to explain their astounding recordings for the soundtracks of ‘Flash Gordon’ and ‘Highlander’? But explanations and justifications aside, Princes of the Universe, the theme song to the world’s greatest immortal sword fighter movie, is awesome. Whereas some bands might have used the subject matter for metaphor or to express some deeper meaning, Queen’s interpretation of the Highlander mythos treats the source material with the gravitas it deserves: it’s an entirely serious song about immortal swordsmen killing each other throughout history. Also, check out Freddie’s mustache. Epic.

KATHLEEN’S PICKS:

“Kickstart My Heart”, Mötley Crüe
Because that opening riff is so powerful, so unmistakable. Hearing it now makes me want to stand up, flip my desk over and crash out of my office window. The video was all about heart-pumping adrenaline and extreme sports, but the real meaning was something else entirely. Back in 1987 while the band was on tour with Guns N’ Roses, bassist Nikki Sixx overdosed (In Slash’s hotel room no less— you don’t get any more rockstar than that). Paramedics had to kickstart his heart with 2 shots of adrenaline. The result? A clean and sober songwriter and kick-ass songs like this. I’m not one to drag race or skydive, but I am totally the type to listen to this while playing games on my iPad… don’t judge.

“Panama”, Van Halen

Eddie Van Halen shreds his way onto this playlist. There wasn’t any chance I wouldn’t include them, I just didn’t know which song to pick. David Lee Roth’s slo-mo ninja sword dance and tiger-striped spandex, along with the song’s hypnotic bridge, and the uber-catchy chorus are what sold me. Now, reach down… between your legs, and… ease the seat back… and play some Rock Mahjong HD.

I can’t wait to get home to download this game! I have 3 suggestions for someones playlist:

    Mother, Danzig
Do I even really need to explain it? Tell your children not to walk my way – that’s because I’m busy playing Rock Majong and your children are annoying me. Ok, maybe a little harsh but I need to focus.

    Thunder Kiss ’65
The music alone gets you rocking – when you hear the beginning riff, you can’t help yourself – you have to crank it! Perfect for playing a game where you have to match tiles.

    Tik Tok, Kesha
Ok, this has nothing to do with Rock, but needs to be on everyone’s playlist – tell me one person that doesn’t know every single lyric to this song – even my 3 year old goes around the house saying, Brush my teeth with a bottle of jack. Wow, writing that makes me think, I should stop playing these games and maybe start doing some better parenting.
