Is That A Megatouch, Or Are… Oh, No Nevermind, It’s Not

Being a Megatouch employee means that  when we see bars on TV and in movies, we are programmed to scan the tabletops and dark corners of each scene, looking for our games. Like I said in last week’s post, we don’t always get it right. The important thing is that we’re always looking. It may not always be fun, and it certainly doesn’t always end the way we’d like it to, but we can’t stop obsessing, squinting, pausing, rewinding, and repeating.

Every week in my house:
“Oooh, what was that? Rewind that. Is that a Megatouch?”
At this point, my face is about 4 inches from my TV or monitor.
“There! Pause it. That! Is that a… ”
By now, I know how this will play out but in a final act of desperation, I change angles. I cock my head, or move to the side as if seeing it from a different perspective will yield different results. It rarely ever never does.

One very recent example was in season 1 of `Homeland`, which is on Showtime. By the way, if you haven’t seen it, you might want to cancel your plans this weekend and watch every episode of the first season. You’re welcome.

`Homeland` episode 7, “The Weekend

"That's not a Megatouch! Let's get out of here!

Part of my daily duties here at Megatouch HQ include the upkeep of our twitter feed.* One thing I love to do is to repost twitpics from people who’ve set the high score on their favorite Megatouch game, and taken a photo of it. Many times I’ve clicked on the photo only to see someone proudly showing off a score on our competitor’s machine. Does it make me mad? Helllzzz No!
*follow us @megatouch!!! (shameless plug)

No he's not!

And there’s the regular stream of mistaken identities in my twitter feed:

Nope, sorry dude. No Bejeweled Blitz on our machines!

Now, before you start getting the wrong idea, this isn’t a post about our competitors. Think of this as a lesson in how a brand name becomes common terminology. It’s more about genericized trademarks like Band Aid, Vaseline, Kleenex, and Q-Tips, and less about adhesive bandages, petrolatum, facial tissues, and cotton swabs. I mean, have you ever heard anyone say “There’s always room for flavored gelatin dessert?” NO, because that sounds gross! What about Jell-O? Yes please!
Megatouch is totally reaching Scotch Tape-level recognition, and here’s how I know:

BECAUSE LEMMY SAYS SO.
Look, I don’t care if you’re a fan of Motorhead or not, but you need to be a fan of Lemmy Kilmister. The guy is a legend. No, no— forget that, he’s a rock and roll institution.  He still tours, he still drinks a bottle of Jack Daniels every day, and HE LOVES TO PLAY MEGATOUCH!
In 2010, there was a documentary made about him, and in it, he’s shown hanging out at the bar at Hollywood’s famous Rainbow Room. He hangs out there so much, that fans routinely turn up for photo ops with the frontman, and he never turns them down… as long as he’s not in the middle of a game. One of the bartenders commented that:

“Anyone that wants a picture, he’ll take one… You know, anybody that wants to talk to him, he’ll talk to ‘em, but… you gotta let him play his Megatouch first.”

Lemmy, at the Rainbow, playing the not-Megatouch.

While we’d rather Lemmy be an exclusive Megatouch player, the fact is he plays coin-op games in bars. And you should too. Lemmy commands it. Do you really want to disobey Lemmy??

What about from this angle? Nope, still not ours. Damn.

Word on the street (actually from Lemmy’s PR guy, whom we have been harassing speaking with) is that Lemmy has an iPad. Perhaps you’ll meet up with him one day through the magic of Game Center and you’ll team up in a game of Photo Hunt Social HD, and you’ll go straight to the top of the leaderboards, routinely annihilating anyone that dares challenge this dynamic duo… Oh, wait— that’s just my dream.
Don’t judge me.
